Soil Exploration: Planning for soil exploration, boring methods, bore logs, soil / rock sampling and testing, SPT & CPT field test.Basic definition and weight – volumetric interrelationships and examples. Determination of specific gravity, moisture content, consistency limits: liquid limit, plastic limit, shrinkage limit and relative density, particle size analysis (sieve and sedimentation), soil identification and classification systems and examples. Introduction to methods of soil improvement.

Inter granular and pore water pressures: Overburden soil stresses and examples.

Soil water: bernoulli’s heads, Darcy ‘s law permeability, determination of coefficient of permeability in laboratory, capillarity phenomena in soil, seepage, seepage force, flow net seepage calculation from flow net, Examples

Shear strength of soil: analyzing shear failure, Mohr coulomb strength theory,and determination of shear strength of soils under drained and undrained conditions laboratory tests.

Compaction of soil: Definitions, role of moisture in compaction, laboratory compaction test (standard and modified) zero air – voids curve, factors affecting compaction, compaction of soils and methods of controlling compaction in the field.

Stresses caused by external loads in soil:

Boussinesq’s Equations for different loading conditions, Equivalent point load methods and Newark’s influence chart.
